John MacDiarmid
N.Z.M.C. WELLLINGTON (KARORI) CEMETERY Was born in 1885, and entered G.W.C. in 1900. Passing to Edin. Univ. in 1902, he graduated M.B. Ch.B. in 1907, and thereafter emigrated to New Zealand. In 1916 he received a commission in the N.Z. Medical Corps. He died of appendicitis at Wellington, N.Z., Mar. 18, 1917.

A. MacDonald Royal Scots THIEPVAL MEMORIAL Joined the 15th R.S., shortly after war broke out, and was promoted L/Cpl. Crossing to France in 1916, he was killed in action on the Somme on July 1, 1916.

Alan Richard Macdonald
R.A.F. RUNNYMEDE MEMORIAL Alan R. MacDonald, Flying Officer, Royal Air Force, was the son of Mr. and Mrs. W. E. MacDonald, The Schoolhouse, Balmaclellan, by Castle Douglas, and formerly of Penang and South Africa. Born on 5th December 1921, Alan was a pupil at Watson's from 1934 to 1940, when he gained his 1st XV Colours. Joining the R.A.F. immediately on leaving school, he received his training in this country and in Canada, where he gained his wings and commission. When operating from Longkesh, N. Ireland, he was killed in action on the night of 29th October 1943. His parents have dedicated " The Alan MacDonald Nature Section " of the School Library to his memory.

Arthur MacDonald Canadian R.H. HANGARD WOOD BRITISH CEMETERY The son of Mr. A. Macdonald, Edin., was born in 1885 and entered G.W.C. in 1900. He emigrated to Canada, where he joined the 13th (Canadian) R.H. as a Pte. He was killed on Aug. 8, 1918.

Colin Lorne Macdonald
Sudan Defence Force ADDIS ABABA WAR CEMETERY Colin L. MacDonald, Lieutenant-Colonel, Sudan Defence Force, Frontier Battalion, was the son of the Rev. Coll A. MacDonald, D.D., 16 Royal Circus, Edinburgh, and formerly of Logierait, Ballinluig. Born on 9th February 1912, he came from the parish school to attend Watson's from 1923 to 1939, before proceeding to Edinburgh University. Graduating M.A. with Honours in History in 1934, he entered the Sudan Political Service, and was killed in action on 31st March 1941 at Debra Marcos, Abyssinia, when on service with the Sudan Defence Force. A correspondent writes: "He lies among the cypress and the wild flowers on that fragrant hill-top, kissed by the sun and the wind, in a country of wild and extraordinary beauty, facing the enduring hills that reminded him so strongly of the hills of home."

Lewis Gordon Grant Macdonald
REME ANZIO WAR CEMETERY L. G. G. ("Sandy") MacDonald, Craftsman, Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, youngest son of Mr. Colin MacDonald, Scottish Land Court, and Mrs. MacDonald, 46 Comiston Drive, Edinburgh, was born on 5th March 1921 and attended Watson's from 1926 to 1938. He was a popular member of the Watsonian hockey XI, a keen student of French and Russian literature, and a great lover of the Scottish Highlands. Prior to the outbreak of war he was on the staff of Messrs. McVitie & Price, Edinburgh. He joined The Royal Scots as a territorial and later transferred to the R.E.M.E., with whom he served in Egypt, Sicily and Italy. He was killed in action at the Anzio Bridgehead in February 1944

Malcolm MacDonald
R.H. DOIRAN MEMORIAL The younger son of Mr. A. Macdonald, Edin., was born in 1893, and attended G.W.C. 1903-13. He was keenly interested in the College Scout Troop, in which he was latterly an A.S.M., and played occasionally for the XV. in Rugby. On leaving School to study medicine, he still maintained his interest in the Scouts. Gazetted to the 10th R.H., he was sent to the Salonika front, and was reported missing Oct. 1916

Somerled MacDonald Sikhs PETERCULTER NEW BURIAL GROUND The elder son of Rev. W. S. Macdonald, M.A., was born in Kirkcaldy in 1893, and attended G.W.C. 1902-7. After completing his education at Stanley House, Bridge of Allan (1907-9), he served his apprenticeship as a banker with the Bank of Scotland, and at the outbreak of war held an appointment in London, in the Hong-Kong and Shanghai Bank. Having trained in the Inns of Court O.T.C., 1914-15, he was gazetted to the 2nd Cameron Hrs. and served with his Bn. in the Strums Valley, Macedonia. He was transferred to the 1/54th Sikhs, with the rank of Lt., and took part in several engagements on the N.W. Frontier of India, and later campaigned in Palestine. Invalided home in May 1919, he died on Nov. 30th 1919.

Ian MacFarlane
R.A.M.C. KANTARA WAR MEMORIAL CEMETERY Was born in 1888, and attended G.W.C. 1895-1905. He left to study medicine at Edin. Univ., where he graduated M.B. Ch.B. in 1911. While at the Univ. he was a member of the O.T.C. On graduating, he was sent by the Edin. Medical Missionary Socy. to Nazareth, whence in 1914 he was moved to Damascus as colleague to Dr. Mackinnon. He was home on furlough in 1914, and, after assisting in the Infirmary for a time, was gazetted to the R.A.M.C. His knowledge of Arabic made him supremely useful in the East, and he was transferred thither with the rank of Capt. in May 1916. While working at Khantara, in an isolation camp for typhus fever, he fell ill and died of the scourge, July 1917.

W. Cargill Stuart MacFarlane
Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders ADANAC MILITARY CEMETERY, MIRAUMONT Was born in 1897, and attended G.W.C. 1903-10. He obtained a commission in the 4th A. and S. H., and on crossing to France in 1916 was attached to the 11th Bn. He fell in action while in charge of a covering party in an advanced position on Aug. 28, 1916.
