William Anderson Douglas
Royal Scots THIEPVAL MEMORIAL A son of the late Bailie R. A. Douglas, was born at Edin. in 1890. He was educated at G.W.C. 1900-6, and Daniel Stewart's. On leaving School he decided to be an electrical engineer and attended the Heriot-Watt College. In 1909 he joined the 6th R.S., holding when war broke out the rank of Lt. He was promoted Capt. in Oct. 1914, served in the Senussi campaign in Egypt, and later in France. He fell in action at Guillemont (Somme) Aug. 24, 1916.

Alexander Hamilton Doull
Royal Scots Fusiliers NAPLES WAR CEMETERY Alexander H. Doull, Captain, Royal Scots Fusiliers, the elder son of Mr. A. Doull, M.A., and Mrs. Doull, 21 Queen's Avenue, Blackhall, Edinburgh, was born on 9th June 1914. Receiving his early education at Viewpark (now Gillsland Park) School, he entered Watson's in 1926. On leaving in 1931 he joined the staff of the Caledonian Insurance Co. He was a keen golfer and a member of Baberton Golf Club. On the outbreak of war he volunteered for the infantry, and early in 1940 received his commission in the R.S.F. He was severely wounded in action in January 1944, and died in hospital in Italy in March of that year.

John Elliot Dowell
K.A.R. Not Known The eldest son of the late C. S. Dowell, A.C.S., was born in Edin. in 1893, and attended G.W.C. 1899-1909. After four years in Central Africa as a planter, he returned home in Oct. 1914, and enlisted in the Sportsman's Bn. as a Pte. Discharged the following year on medical grounds, he spent two years in Assam, returning to join the M.G.C. Again discharged, he left for Africa, where he received a commission in K.A.R. in Dec. 1917. He was accidentally killed Dec. 25, 1917, at Victoria, Cameroons, West Africa.

Robert Kenneth Drummond
Cameron Highlanders ROYALLIEU FRENCH NATIONAL CEMETERY, COMPIEGNE He was born in 1894, and attended G.W.C. 1899-1912. He was a forward in the School XV. of 1911-12, and afterwards played for the Watsonians. Enlisting in the 9th H.L.I. in Aug. 1914, he went to France in Nov. of that year, and was severely wounded at Richebourg, May 17, 1915. Thereafter he obtained a commission in the 6th Cameron Hrs., and, for gallantry shown on the Somme, at La Bassee, and Arras, won the M.C. with Bar, and promotion to the rank of Capt. He went with the 15th Div. south to stem the tide of the German July Offensive, and was mortally wounded at Buzancy on July 28, 1918. He died next day in the Clearing Hospital at Pierrefonds, and rests with twenty-two Scottish lads in the Communal French Cemetery there.

William Young Drummond
Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders PERONNE ROAD CEMETERY, MARICOURT The youngest son of Mr. A. Drummond, Kildrocket, West Calder, was born in 1894, and, after attending the local school, came to G.W.C. in 1909. Two years later he passed on to Edin. Univ., intending to study for the ministry. He had a bent for philosophy, was an able debater, and was keenly interested in social work. When war broke out he had all but finished his Honours course in philosophy, and immediately on graduating in 1915 he was given a commission in the 3rd A. and S. H. Crossing to France in Aug. 1915, he served in the Ypres salient, and then on the Somme, where he was killed July 11, 1916.

James Philip Dudgeon
Royal Scots ETAPLES MILITARY CEMETERY The only son of Mr. E. R. Dudgeon, Liverpool, was born in 1897, and attended G.W.C. 1905-13. He was engaged in business in Leith for a time, and joined the 3/9th R.S. in Oct. 1915. The following June he was moved to France, and was severely wounded on July 21. He died in hospital on Aug. 21, 1916.

Charles William Duggan
R.A.M.C. HOLLYBROOK MEMORIAL, SOUTHAMPTON Was born in 1866, and entered G.W.C. in 1871. On leaving school, he studied medicine at Edin. Univ., where he graduated M.B. C.M. in 1887. Joining the R.A.M.C. as Lt. in 1891, he rose to the rank of Major in 1903. In 1898 he took part in the SOFA's Expedition. For services during the Great War he was mentioned in Despatches in Feb. 1917. He was drowned through the torpedoing of the Leinster on Oct. 10, 1918.

John Duncan
Highland Light Infantry YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL The son of Mr. J. Duncan, Edin., was born in 1886, and attended G.W.C. 1891-1902. He had a very successful College career, and on becoming an apprentice architect and surveyor exhibited the same diligence in his technical studies. He was in the service of the British Aluminium Coy., but left in Sept. 1914 to join the R.S. In Nov. 1914 he got a commission in the 10th H.L.I., and was promoted Lt. in Jan. 1916. He was stationed in the Ypres Salient for the most part, and was invalided home suffering from shell-shock. He returned to duty in Jan. 1917, and fell in action at Frezenburg, Ypres, on July 31 of that year.

John Valentine Stuart Duncan
R.A.F. BAYEUX WAR CEMETERY J. V. Stuart Duncan, Flying Officer, Royal Air Force, the only son of Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Stuart Duncan, 21 Abercorn Terrace, Joppa, attended Watson's from 1935 to 1940, when he took up Engineering studies at Edinburgh University. Joining the University Air Squadron in 1940, he volunteered for the R.A.F. in 1941 and received his training as a fighter-pilot in Florida, U.S.A. He was killed on active service on 3oth May 1943.

William Duncan
Canadian Infantry QUARRY WOOD CEMETERY, SAINS-LES-MARQUION Born in 1891, and attended G.W.C. 1895-1906. After serving for a time in the grain trade in Leith, he emigrated to Canada, where he took up farming near Calgary. Joining the Canadian Infy. (137th Bn.), he was trained in England, and in 1917 took part in the Vimy Ridge action. He was wounded at Lens in May 1917, but, returning to duty early in 1918, he went with the Canadians in their victorious advance from the Somme to Cambrai. He was killed in action at the Canal du Nord, Sept. 28, 1918
